EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION

"THE MORNING AFTER PILL"

Emergency contraception is also known as "The Morning After Pill" and is up to 75% effective in preventing pregnancy if it is taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse (preferably taken after 24 hours). This method may be an important "safety net" if one has missed 2 or more birth control pills, starts a new pack 2 or more days late, misses the deadline date for a contraceptive injection, rape or other forms of missed or damaged contraception.

Emergency contraception is NOT effective in interrupting an already established pregnancy. A pregnancy test should be performed prior to emergency contraception pills being taken.

Women who should NOT use Emergency Contraception are:

1. Already have an established pregnancy
2. History of blood clots
3. Uncontrolled hypertension

5. Smokers over the age of 35
6. Serious liver disease
7. Cancer of the breast or reproductive organs
8. Use of medication to control seizure disorder
